tbh, I expected this thread to be another one complaining that Eve is too hard to be good at, since power gaming is not that helpful. Now that I read that Vets are also annoyed with the skill system, it is an interesting read.
It seems that in time, the real-time skilling system hits limits and you are using a L50 character. Anything you do now either gives minimum benefit, or is just for fun. Well, as others have noted, there is no end to eve, and the closest thing there is to an end is the politics and being a 'famous' player.
I have always been of the opinion that the system is great because it does not keep new players completely helpless in a game where PvP is permitted anywhere, anytime. You may yell 'High-Sec' at me, but ask the guy who got his Itty 5 with 200 mil in zydrine blown up if there is PvP everywhere and he'd say there is. For that reason, and the fact that [spock voice] "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." [/spock voice] I would have to back the CCP in keeping it the same.
If there were changes made to allow a deeper, better specialist, the problem would not be solved, but only postponed. Adding new skills that provide major benefits with major time commitments would get flamed as a new timesink that everybody has to train to stay competitive.
The fact that some players have been around long enough to be positively fantastic with a number of ships is a virtue of the game, not a weakness. If there is a newb who can fly one ship as well as you can, but cannot fly several others well then it is incumbent upon the veteran player to choose a ship that will crush the newb's only strength-that versatility advantage is not to be taken lightly. Even if there is not a game skill advantage, there should always be a player skill advantage in a veteran of several years.
I'll draw a parallel here that may be a bit flame-baity, so please don't take it literally, but just as a metaphor. If person A and person B both purchase Madden 2007 and want to play against each other head-to-head, the player with superior skills will win, all other factors being even. If the same two players chose unequal teams, the person with the better team might win with less skill. However, if the more skilled player has either equal or better team/equipment, that player should always have an advantage and if they lose more often than they win then we have to re-evaluate which is the more skilled player.
